Every Cup Is an Omen: What The Alchemist Taught Me About Listening to My Own Body

Every Cup Is an Omen: What The Alchemist Taught Me About Listening to My Own Body

FOUNDER’S NOTE · AYURVEDIC WELLNESS RITUALS

On ignored exhaustion, ashwagandha tea for sleep, and the quiet Ayurvedic wisdom of paying attention before your body has to shout.

There is a boy in a story who sells his sheep, crosses a desert, and nearly dies more than once.

He does it because he refuses to ignore a feeling in his chest.

A feeling that keeps whispering, there is more for you than this.

I have read The Alchemist more times than I can count.

But it was only after years of building Asha Tea Company that I understood Santiago’s journey differently.

I started Asha Tea Company from a kitchen counter in Mumbai. Today, the brand sits in homes across the country.

And now I understand that Santiago’s journey was never really about treasure.

It was about listening.

It was about trusting the quiet, insistent voice inside you. And doing so long before the world gives you permission to.

That is the story of this brand.

And if I am honest, it is the story of every woman who has ever ignored her own exhaustion because there was too much else to do.

Why I Started Asha Tea Company

I did not start Asha Tea Company because I had a five-year plan.

I started it because my own body had been trying to tell me something for years.

I had spent most of my life being too busy, too dutiful, and too “responsible” to sit down and actually listen.

There is a moment in The Alchemist when Santiago realizes that the desert speaks.

It speaks through the wind.

It speaks through the way a hawk circles.

It speaks through the silence before a sandstorm.

The old alchemist tells him that when you truly want something, the universe conspires to help you find it.

But long before that line becomes hopeful, it is first about attention.

It is about noticing the omens your own life keeps sending you.

Even when you would rather scroll past them.

The Omens I Kept Ignoring

My omens were smaller than a desert crossing.

There was a knot of tension between my shoulders every evening. No amount of stretching seemed to fix it.

There was sleep that never felt like rest.

And there was a gut with opinions about everything I ate. It voiced those opinions loudly and often.

For years, I treated these things as inconveniences to be managed.

I did not think of them as a language to be understood.

This is what Ayurveda calls the wisdom of the body.

It is a tradition thousands of years older than the wellness industry that has since tried to package it.

Ayurveda does not ask you to fight your body.

It asks you to listen.

To listen the way Santiago learned to listen to the desert: patiently, humbly, and without demanding instant answers.

The First Cup of Calm & Sleep

That is where the first cup of what would become Calm & Sleep was born.

Not in a lab.

It began on a night when I could not sleep.

I did not want another pill. I did not want another scroll through my phone. And I did not want another distraction from what I was feeling.

My nervous system was simply asking for a pause.

So I began experimenting with chamomile, ashwagandha, and brahmi.

These ingredients have deep roots in Ayurvedic and traditional wellness practices.

I brought them together into an evening tea ritual designed to create a quieter moment before bed.

What came out of that restless night is now something thousands of people drink before bed.

Not because it is trendy.

Because it became a ritual.

A way of listening slowly.

A way of sitting still long enough to notice.

“Your heart will never say anything that contradicts your Personal Legend.”

I think about this line every time someone tells me they feel guilty for wanting a slower morning.

Or a warmer ritual.

Or five quiet minutes with a cup instead of a phone.

Your heart is not being dramatic when it asks for rest.

It is doing exactly what Santiago’s heart did in the desert.

It is trying to point you back toward who you actually are.

Underneath the noise of who you think you are supposed to be.

The Philosophy Behind Every Blend

This is the thread that runs through everything we make at Asha Tea Company.

Take Daily Immunity.

It is built on tulsi for the days your body needs support.

Then there is Digestive Wellness, for the days your gut needs gentleness.

And there is our Kashmiri Kahwa.

It tastes like every winter afternoon I remember from childhood.

Saffron and cinnamon steep into something that feels less like a beverage and more like a memory being returned to you.

Even our Kadak Chai and Tea Masala have the same intention.

They are rooted in the strong, spiced traditions of Indian households.

They are made not to distract you from your day, but to anchor you back into it.

Why I Named It Asha

I named this company Asha — hope.

Because that is what I believe wellness actually is.

It is not a punishing routine of things you must do.

It is a quiet form of hope.

A hope that your body, if you listen closely enough, can guide you toward what it needs.

There is a concept in the Bhagavad Gita that I return to constantly.

It shaped both my personal life and the book I later wrote, Fall in Love with Karma.

The concept is nishkama karma — action without attachment to the outcome.

Krishna tells Arjuna that we are entitled to our actions, never to the fruits of those actions.

I think of this every single time I brew a cup of tea.

The ritual itself is the point.

The boiling water.

The steeping leaves.

The five minutes of stillness.

Not the outcome.

Not whether today was productive or perfect or praised.

Just the act of showing up for yourself.

Fully.

Without needing it to prove anything.

The Treasure Was Never the Pyramids

Santiago’s treasure, when he finally finds it, is buried back at the very church where his journey began.

The point was never the pyramids.

The point was who he became on the way there.

And the fact that he trusted the whispers along the way instead of silencing them for something louder and more “practical.”

I think about how much treasure most of us have buried in our own routines.

It can be in the tea we make ourselves each morning.

It can be in the five minutes we finally give our nervous systems instead of our notifications.

And yet, we stop noticing it.

Why?

Because we were taught that rest has to be earned.

Not chosen.

A Small, Repeated Signal

There is another detail in The Alchemist I think about often.

Santiago’s journey does not begin with certainty.

It begins with a recurring dream he almost dismisses.

A coincidence he almost explains away.

A Gypsy woman’s advice he almost ignores because it sounds too simple to be true.

Most of us begin exactly this way too.

We do not wake up one day with total clarity about what our body needs.

We begin with a small, repeated signal.

A headache that shows up every Sunday evening.

A heaviness after certain meals.

A restlessness with no obvious cause.

And every time, we have a choice.

We can explain it away.

Or we can finally sit with it.

How Daily Immunity Began

When I started brewing the first versions of what would become our Daily Immunity blend, I was not trying to build a business.

I was trying to understand why I fell ill every time the seasons changed.

I was also trying to understand why my energy dipped exactly when I needed it most.

Ayurveda taught me that immunity, or ojas, is not something you build overnight with a single ingredient.

It is cultivated like a garden.

Patiently.

With tulsi and ashwagandha working together, the way a community works together.

None of them loud on their own.

All of them essential in concert.

That lesson found its way into how I built this company too.

Not one dramatic launch.

Instead, small, steeped decisions.

One blend and one customer letter at a time.

When Someone Listens Back

I still remember the first message a stranger sent me after trying Calm & Sleep.

It was from a woman in Pune.

She wrote that she had not slept through the night in eight months. She also shared that our tea had become part of a ritual that helped her mind slow down enough to rest.

I read that message the way Santiago must have read the omens in the sky before the sandstorm.

As confirmation.

The small, quiet thing I had been building in my kitchen was not just for me.

It was for every person whose nervous system had been asking for a pause.

And had not yet been given one.

The Rigor Behind Every Blend

This is why every blend we make carries both the rigor of certification and the soul of something made by hand.

We have our FSSAI licensing and Tea Board approval.

But there is also something more personal behind every blend.

It comes from someone who has personally sat with the ache each blend is meant to soothe.

A tea company can sell you flavor.

What we are trying to offer, if “sell” is even the right word, is a moment of return.

A return to your body.

A return to your breath.

A return to the version of yourself that existed before the noise convinced you that rest was a luxury rather than a right.

You Do Not Need to Cross a Desert

You do not need to cross a desert to find your Personal Legend.

Sometimes, it is waiting in the ten minutes it takes water to boil.

Sometimes, it is in the moment you finally sit down.

Sometimes, it is in the first sip of a herbal tea made to become part of a mindful daily ritual.

That is the story we have been steeping, cup by cup, since the very beginning.

Your Body Has Been Sending You Omens Too

If sleepless nights, a restless gut, or the ache for a slower morning sound familiar, we made these blends for exactly that moment.
